چکیده

On continuous media(CM) servers, data are handled periodically. The length of the period or round length has a strong innuence on the performance of CM servers, and the optimal round length for a server is determined mainly by the bit rate of the media object. As far as we know, all existing disk scheduling schemes are of single round length, in which all objects are serviced using a same round length regardless of their bit rates. Consequently in case of heterogeneous media servers, which services high bit-rated objects and low bit-rated objects simultaneously, they could not service streams using their respective optimal round length. In this paper, a model of CM server which services each object using its optimal round length is presented for the rst time. The performances of the single round length model and the multiple round length model are compared through extensive simulation and the multiple round length scheme always shows equal or better performance.

Simple Continuous Media Storage Server on Real-Time Mach

This paper presents the design and implementation of a simple continuous media storage server: CRAS on Real-Time Mach. CRAS is a specially optimized storage system for retrieving multiple continuous media streams such as audio and video from a disk at constant rates for small scale distributed multimedia systems. Many previous continuous media storage servers have focussed on high throughput fo...

Adaptive Presentation and Scheduling of Media Streams on Parallel Storage Servers

One property of most User Interfaces is the presentation of multiple streaming media (video and audio) that must be presented within a predefined range of acceptable levels of quality, i.e. satisfying a set of Quality of Service (QoS) constraints. The network servers which serve such interfaces differ enough from traditional storage servers since they store and manipulate continuous media data ...

Vacation model for Markov machine repair problem with two heterogeneous unreliable servers and threshold recovery

Markov model of multi-component machining system comprising two unreliable heterogeneous servers and mixed type of standby support has been studied. The repair job of broken down machines is done on the basis of bi-level threshold policy for the activation of the servers. The server returns back to render repair job when the pre-specified workload of failed machines is build up. The first (seco...

Hierarchical Caching and Prefetching for Improving the Performance of Continuous Media Servers

The number of concurrent video or audio streams a disk-based Continuous Media Server can support, is limited by the time needed for the associated data blocks to be retrieved from secondary storage. Along with the cost of RAM, these two strongly interrelated parameters determine the cost/performance metric of the Media Server. Research efforts have focused either on maximizing disk performance ...

Scalable Scheduling Support for Loss and Delay Constrained Media Streams

Real-time media servers need to service hundreds and, possibly, thousands of clients, each with their own quality of service (QoS) requirements. To guarantee such diverse QoS requires fast and efficient scheduling support at the server. This paper describes the practical issues concerned with the implementation of a scalable real-time packet scheduler resident on a server, designed to meet serv...
